Cinema of the World: Maborosi (1995) with The Parallel Cinema Club

Our weekly meetings consist of a screening of an arthouse film, followed by a discussion. The discussion is led by one of our members, or sometimes a guest speaker, and encourages members to share their thoughts and interpretations of the film.

Maborosi (1995)

A contemplative Hirokazu Kore-eda film, “Maborosi” delicately explores the depths of grief and the journey towards healing. Following the story of a young widow, Yumiko, whose husband commits suicide without an apparent motive, spends years alone in guilt. She remarries and moves to a remote village in search of happiness again. The film captures the haunting beauty of loss and the quiet resilience of the human spirit. In an unforgettable scene, Yumiko stands by the sea at sunset, the vast, shimmering ocean reflecting her inner turmoil and the distant horizon symbolizing the possibility of peace and acceptance.

Who are The Parallel Cinema Club?

We are a community-run film society based out of Bangalore and Hyderabad. We are a group of film enthusiasts who meet up once a week to discuss the reel world, auteurs and themes, and occasionally host guest lectures.
